LOCAL RESOURCES (for the Omaha/Council Bluffs area)

We have a variety of protocols that we follow. The one that we choose will depend upon the severity of the symptoms.

Dog is Completely Down in the Rear End

• IMMEDIATELY go to the SPECIALTY VET at K-State's Omaha clinic - MidWest Veterinary Specialty Hospital. MidWest is a referral-only clinic and they would be our choice to perform the delicate back surgery. (Their neurosurgeon is on the Dodgers list page of recommended Neurosurgeons in the US.)

Dog has Partial Paralysis
(ie: dragging a leg or wobbly walk)

• We IMMEDIATELY go to our TRADITIONAL VET for an x-ray and put dog on pain meds, steroids, and muscle relaxant. (If you dont have a local vet, Nebraska Dachshund Rescue can recommend a great one for you!)
• If needed, we then will get referral from our TRADITIONAL VET to go to K-State's Omaha clinic - MidWest Veterinary Specialty Hospital. MidWest is a referral-only clinic and they would be our choice to perform the delicate back surgery. (Their neurosurgeon is on the Dodgers list page of recommended Neurosurgeons in the US.)

Dog has a Sore Back
(ie: sitting when they stop walking, hesitation at steps, yelping when picked up
, head hanging, lethargy, dull eyes)
• We will visit a HOLISTIC Vet for electro-acupuncture, chiropractic adjustment, cold laser therapy, & meds. (If you dont have a local HOLISTIC vet, Nebraska Dachshund Rescue can recommend a great one for you!)

Important Home Instructions
Regardless of the severity of symptoms or which type of vet treated the dog, the NUMBER ONE most important aftercare instruction that can 100% affect your dog's recovery is CRATE REST. We can't emphasize enough the importance of CRATE REST for the alotted number of weeks that the vet recommends. A dog may seem 'better' after a few days or a couple of weeks, but one flight of steps...one jump off the couch...one happy dance... any one of those actions can undo all of your hard work and you'll all be back to square one.

Dodgers List has this on their homepage - "Make sure you have protected your dog's spinal cord with 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 only out at potty times. Carry to and from the potty place. At potty times just the very fewest of footsteps to get the job done then carry back to the recovery suite."

Cart Manufacturer
If a cart is in your dog's future, we can steer you in the right direction! We have experience with different types of carts and various manufacturers. Our go-to cart maker is Eddie's Wheels. (http://eddieswheels.com/)
