DACHSHUND FACTS

"Our goal is to put our rescued dachshunds into the best home for them."
Dachshunds are very personable breeds, but they can also have some naughty traits:

1 - Stubborn, sometimes hard to potty train
2 - Escape Artists - can squeeze any little hole and get out of your yard
3 - Love to SNIFF and DIG. Dachshunds are bred to kill small animals.
4 - They are very protective of their owners.
5 - Do not like to be startled when sleeping.
6 - Prone to back problems - need to be kept slim.
7 - Can be 'barky'

Dachshund Quick Facts

Dachshunds were first bred in the early 1600s in Germany. The goal was to create a fearless, elongated dog that could dig the earth from a badger burrow and fight to the death with the vicious badgers. The word "dachshund" literally means "badger dog" in German. The first dachshunds were much larger than the size we are accustomed to seeing today. The reduction in size came about as they were bred smaller so they could help control rodent populations; such as rabbits, mice, &moles. Digging skills still required!

They were very popular in the US in the early 1900's, but fell out of favor after WWII. Guilty by association!

Dachshunds can be standard or miniature size. Standards range from 16-32 pounds, while Miniatures weigh 11 pounds and under. There is no official classification for the term "tween", which is frequently used to describe the 12 - 20 lb range.
